Globally, M&A activity is on increasing. However, the growth rates are uneven. The amount of activity is also influenced by industry and geography.

M&A is booming in certain industries, including technology, energy, and healthcare. Other industries, like education and financial services, have seen a more modest growth.

Many companies are pursuing business transformation and profitable growth through strategic acquisitions. In particular, they are targeting companies in the service sector that offer digital solutions for customer engagement and business operations, as well as companies which can assist them in complying with environmental regulations or cut emissions. They may also be looking to acquire manufacturing assets, such as those used for EV battery production.

Global M&A activity slowed down in the first quarter of 2024 but could increase as financial sponsors invest their capital and activist investors keep calling for change at the corporate level. The Americas was the biggest M&A market, followed by Asia and Europe. In terms of deal value, 2024’s initial nine months were dominated by deals worth $10 billion or more than any year prior to the outbreak.

M&A is enhanced by the rapid pace of technological changes as companies acquire new technologies that enhance products or allow them to enter new markets. M&A in the manufacturing industry is growing as companies invest in AI and machine learning robotics, predictive robots, as well as smart factories in order to increase efficiency and productivity. The rapid growth of e-commerce has also triggered M&A by logistics companies looking to acquire or develop distribution networks. Some companies combine to consolidate or broaden their product lines, whereas others collaborate to cut costs or R&D synergies.
